Confessions of a PSPgo Owner

White PSPgo

That’s right, I admit it. I caved in to my techno-gadget-loving desires and shelled out the $250 for another PSP when my current PSP works just fine. It’s white and sparkly and cute, and I just want to hug it and squeeze it and name it George. But before the sexist comments come out that I only bought it for the girlish reason of being cute, I really did have reasons for doing so, and it’s because of these reasons that I do not regret my purchase.

Well, that’s not totally true. I do miss that $250 that could have been used on other games.

But I digress.

I originally bought the handheld for review purposes for another site (claimed expense on taxes, baby!), and I was very, very skeptical about it due to things I’ve heard fellow Kombo colleagues say, particularly in regards to comfort. After playing a few games on it, I have to say that I never experienced any of the discomfort others have either claimed to have experienced to claimed to must be true. It’s actually more comfortable for me to hold and play for a lengthy amount of time than my regular PSP.

It’s also really nice to not have to swap out memory sticks to play different games. When I’m packing for travel, I can just stick the tiny thing in my purse and pack away the charging cable. I don’t need to pack UMDs or memory sticks, two things that can easily be lost on a plane. Ask our News Director, Brad Hilderbrand.

Now, is all this worth the $250 I spent? Unfortunately, no, and I blame both myself and Sony for this. I blame myself for being such a gadget whore and always needing something new and shiny. You have no idea how much it is killing me that I do not have the new iPhone 4. But I’ve doled out most of the blame to Sony for their lack of support for the PSPgo. If only they allowed free downloads of games you already own on UMD with a proof of purchase. If only they made the PlayStation Minis exclusive to the PSP. If only they stopped making UMDs in the first place. The list goes on and on.

I still use my PSPgo, and due to the fact that the PSP has very few decent UMD games, I play with my PSPgo far more often than my PSP. I play the few decent Minis that have released, and I download all PSOne Classic releases to it. I have Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night all on there with plenty of room to spare. When I initially tried to download FFVII on my PSP memory stick, I had to move game data off the stick because it was only 2GB and the game requires over 1.5GB.

So even though a friend of mine has said that the only use for my PSPgo would be to kick it down the stairs, I confess that I still love it despite its limited use and I would never purposefully kick it down the stairs.

Now don’t think this means I’ll run out and buy the rumored PSP 2/PSP Phone. I have my limits.

Maybe.

I’ll have to wait and see.

Don’t judge me!

About the CrunchyChocobo

Keri has a weird gaming backstory that is better left unsaid. She has been part of the games writing industry since 2004 and has grown to love all RPGs, shooters, visual novels, and your general open-world adventure. When she’s not gaming or stabbing writers with her red pen (a favorite pastime), she’s teaching yoga, reading the latest WH40K novel, or trying to make sure one of her kids doesn’t set the house on fire. She used to write for various video game websites. Now she writes for herself and yells about comics on a podcast.
