I've been reading the Sword of Truth series since I was in grad school. It was my gateway to the world of fantasy novels. They aren't as revered as the Wheel of Time series, and now that I've read a couple of those books, I see why. As much as I love the SoT, the books have waaaaay too much exposition. (To quote David, they're rather preachy.) Too much talky and not enough hacky 'n slashy. Like most books in a series, I like some far more than others. I'm currently re-reading the series (because I've run out of books and money) and in the process, I figured out why like some of the books more than others. The following should not spoil the books in anyway, in terms of the plot. If they do, you've grossly misunderstood the main plot.
The books mostly focus around the two main characters: Richard and Kahlan. I seem to like the books a lot better if these two are apart. 1. Wizard's First Rule - They're together, but they haven't fallen in love quite yet. Not only that, but they think they can't be together. This book started my downward spiral into fantasy.
2. Stone of Tears - My favorite book. They're separated.
3. The Blood of the Fold - Another good book. Still separated.
4. The Temple of the Winds - Pretty good, but had several gagging moments. Yep, they're together.
5. Soul of the Fire - Not my least favorite, but close. They're married now and OMG they have too many alone moments for two people trying to save the world.
6. Faith of the Fallen - Loved this book. It does get very preachy at times (taps into John Galt) but the two plots are thrilling to read. They're apart.
7. Pillars of Creation - They're back together, although it doesn't matter because you hardly read about them until the end. It focuses on Richard's random half-brother and half-sister. Zzzzzzzzzzzz
8. Naked Empire - Tied with Pillars as my least favorite. Yes they're together and taking their exposition and lovey dovey crap to an isolated group of people. The main idea of the plot was great but the execution... zzzzzzz
9. Chainfire - Once again, Richard has lost his wife! Only this time, no one but he remembers that she exists. They might as well have been together, because Richard rambled on and on about how much he loved her and how great she was practically every time he opened his mouth or the readers are privy to his thoughts. I really thought this book was a waste of time.
These two characters are incredible when they're apart. They take action, become actual protagonists, and explain things only when necessary. Being together unfortunately makes them ga-ga, boring, gabby, and a little foolish. Don't argue with me that most couples are this way. I don't read fantasy to delve into the real world.
Will I buy the next book? I've come this far, and I really want to see how it wraps up. Besides, I have to see how he miraculously gets his wife back. Of course I know that he'll probably lose her again in the next few books. I think it's Goodkind's plot device to make things actually HAPPEN in the story. Richard can't seem to focus on anything besides protecting Kahlan when he's with her and vice versa, so I'd better separate them for awhile so we can have some plot advancement. posted by Keri

This is probably one of my favorite pictures of me with Lee, the charming fellow giving two birds, and I look so thin! I got all giddy when I saw it. It's not everyday I find myself on someone else's website!
(Here's a blow up of that picture in case you're interested.) posted by Keri

Another game down in Waco, and another loss. It was so heartbreaking. We were winning most of the game and then we do what we do best: get stupid penalties and beat ourselves. This weekend will be against Kansas State. I have no idea what to expect for that one. We did have a good time in Waco besides the loss. Shawn and I hit the bookstore and bought a new Baylor shirt for my Dad, since his forest green shirt he bought during my freshman year has turned rather pukish green, and ended up buying a few fun things for ourselves, including a Christmas gift for my mom. I love finding Christmas gifts when you aren't even shopping for them. We then walked around campus a bit and marveled at how much it has changed since the last time we really walked around... I think that was in 2002 when Jen graduated. So many new buildings. Of course we hit my favorite restaurant, George's, and got my usual baked potato of goodness. Severy and Keira met us there so I could give them a congratulatory hug. They found out this past week that they are pregnant! So incredibly happy for the two of them. Of course then they announced that they might be moving to the Seattle area. One couple moves back for another couple to move there. I'm going to have to visit that city to see what the fuss is all about.
I am still sad that I wasn't able to go to AWA this weekend, though. I should have just bought plane tickets anyway and just eaten the money if we actually did go to trial. I should have learned this with this job a long time ago. Rin-chan and Jules were on the Toonami panel this year. I had a list of annoying questions to ask them and everything. But oh well. I'll be in Atlanta in just a few months, so I can annoy them then.
I'm looking forward to this week. It's the first week in a long time that I won't have a trial to prepare for and it's the week of season premieres for my shows! Hee. posted by Keri

I laughed all through this video. Some people really have incredible talent and lots of time on their hands. Thanks to LO2 for pointing out this video on his blog.
I LOVE this time of year. Fall is probably my favorite time of year in Texas. The weather is cool but not cold. It's perfect jeans weather without needing a jacket. The ground recovers from the blistering summer. Grass looks green again and Mufasa is as frisky as a puppy. And of course, it's football season!! Weekends are full with Big 12 football on Saturday and NFL on Sunday. Shawn gets hissed at if he tries to change the channel. The only thing I wish that Texas had in the fall is the changing of the leaves. I think that's one of the few things I envy the North of, aside from the mild summers. (All summer long I teased Bacon-kun for complaining of the heat, and now she can do the same to me this winter when I complain of the cold.) Of course, one of the biggest reasons why I love the fall is that it's perfect weather for trial time and the suits I have to wear. Nothing is more miserable than wearing a suit in 100+ degree weather and walking back and forth from the office to the courthouse while hauling stuff. posted by Keri

I'm not sure if I'm a big klutz or what. We're going to trial in two weeks, so I was moving the file on a large metal dolly into a conference room for trial prep. While moving the boxes, I smacked the top of my foot against the dolly. Yeah, it hurt, but I continued to work. After I moved everything, I went into my office and started to chat with Bacon-kun. At this point, my foot really hurt. I looked down at it and saw that it was bleeding everywhere. Instead of checking my foot, I typed to Bacon-kun that I hurt my foot and it had a good cut on top. She said, and I quote, "time to stop typing and get some first aid." What a bad day to wear pantyhose... the blood had stuck to it and so I ripped stuck pantyhose off of the wound. Ewwwwww. Gotta find a band aid. Oh look, my foot is beginning to swell. Oh great, I can't put any weight on it. So I hopped into the kitchen, cleaned off my foot, put on a band aid, and made me a bag of ice to help the swelling. It's only 10 a.m. I think I need a Mulligan for today. posted by Keri

I got a phone call last night that I totally did not expect... Kerri and Jarrett are moving back to Dallas! I'm a mixture of happy and sad for them. I'm obviously happy that they are coming back, but I'm sad because Shawn and I never made it to Seattle to visit them.
Oh and here's something else I never expected to hear. While Shawn was with his fellow veterans at the Freedom Walk yesterday, he got to talking to the Plano SWAT team and they offered him a job. There's nothing definite with it (they never discussed salary or anything pertinent) but I'm still shocked that such a random offer was made. posted by Keri

Had to get that out of the way. Today was a total repeat of last Saturday. I drank wine with friends the night before, didn't get drunk, just enough to be happy, and the next day I feel all blah. Not hungover per se, just no motivation to do anything productive. At least last weekend I had two more days of no work... both days filled with the Baylor home game opener and a family Labor Day dinner that I hosted. That is really too much work. I don't want to have Thanksgiving at my house after all. Not that that's going to happen anytime soon, but now I won't be asking about it for years to come.
I did plan on going in to work this weekend. I have a ton of stuff to do to get ready for trial in a couple of weeks that I really can't do while the phone is ringing or other people need a printer. I was going to Saturday before Jenny's party, but then due to a wayward ebay buyer, I had to stay at home and wait for the mail to bring me a money order she express mailed to me. So I figured hey, I have all day Sunday, I can do it then. But all motivation left me when I woke up. I guess there's always next weekend.
Fucking Packers. The Colts game better go better than this. I can't be a complete lazy bum all day and then have all my NFL teams lose. posted by Keri
