Well I'm 0 for 2 when it comes to sequels this summer: X-Men 3 and now Pirates 2. I was so disappointed in Pirates. I had already heard that it wasn't going to have an ending, very much like Matrix 2, so I prepared myself for the lack of ending. That wasn't the problem. I really liked how they left the cliffhanger. But I didn't expect the movie to be so boring or that they will overkill the humor elements from the first movie. Why couldn't they come up with new jokes for the second? People actually walked out of the theatre about half-way through. It was sad. I'm now apprehensive of seeing Superman Returns or Clerks 2. posted by Keri

So wow I'm 29. A friend told me to enjoy it, as this will be the only year I can honestly say that I am 29. My sister told me not to dread it because there are so many people who never make it to 29. I told her that was the most morbid thing I had ever heard. That's from someone who laughs at the most cold-hearted jokes made about medical malpractice. (Yeah, this job really helps build the heart of stone.)
I wasn't looking forward to this day just because Shawn wasn't going to be in town. My birthday is on a Monday, so it wasn't like I could throw a party or anything, it just would have been nice to come home to someone and have a little birthday dinner. But the past couple of days and today were very nice (despite the fact that I was at work preparing for ANOTHER trial). I crashed Nicole's to go swimming all day and then she and Brad once again fed me. They spoil me like crazy when Shawn is out of town. Yesterday my family took me out to lunch, and since it was a crazy 85 degrees, I spent the rest of the day outside reading a book and enjoying the cool breeze. Okay, for my Northern friends that might sound silly, but two days before it was 106. I'll take 20 degree drops in the summer any day a week. Today a friend from work baked me a cheesecake, and a few of my friends from my last firm took me to lunch. That's actually kind of a funny story. I was dreading being alone on my birthday so I called my friend Sharon and begged her to keep me company. She rounded up more friends for my little pity lunch and then they refused to let me pay even though I was the one who asked them to lunch. I feel like a con artist.
But the big surprise came just before lunch. After spending quite some time in the copy center preparing exhibits, I walked back in my office to find these from Shawn:
So despite that I was dreading being alone on my birthday, it turned out to be a very nice day and I was hardly alone. Now that I'm home, I just uploaded the absolutely gorgeous cel Bacon-kun bought me for my birthday and I think I will play a videogame other than Kingdom Hearts. I love that game but oy vey I need a break. posted by Keri

I found another one of those "which anime character are you" quizzes, this time for a generic anime character. I usually try to answer the quiz honestly, just so it's not like I'm trying for a specific character. (I know I'm a sad person, just go with me on this.) This quiz was for a generic anime character. So for those of you who know what my favorite anime of all time is, imagine my surprise and absolute delight when the quiz announced that I am this generic anime character:
I am the mission.
You're a mecha pilot!
You might be a sub-category of bishounen, but this hardly matters since you don't notice anything that didn't feature in the last edition of Guns'n'Ammo magazine. You have been trained since an unfeasibly early age to be a machine of death and destruction. If you've noticed an annoying girl following you around and repeatedly getting into danger and requiring rescue recently, run like hell - she's probably your love interest...
I always knew that I had specific missions while shopping, but I never realized how seriously I take it. Shopping in a mech would be so cool... posted by Keri

We had an absolute blast in New York. Allison's wedding couldn't have been more beautiful, and it was incredible to see my second family again. And wow, New York is humid in the summer. The wedding was an outdoors wedding, and by the time the reception started, I thought I was in Houston. Good thing that the families thought ahead and passed out fans for everyone for the ceremony. It didn't do me any good during the reception, though. Chris' date and I danced during the entire reception. My clothes were completely soaked by the end of the night. Chris kept insisting that Holly and I were drunk, but with all the sweat, there was no way we had any alcohol left in our systems. I was really sad to see it all end. I haven't seen the Mixters since my sister's wedding, and Chris didn't even come then. I made a little promise to myself to keep better in touch with all of them, and Shawn and I need to make a trip to DC to see everyone. I'm sure I'll have to really twist his arm for that vacation.
I can't really describe the rest of our time in the city. I can say that Manhattan is incredible. Would I ever want to live there? Oh hell no. Unless some rich uncle I don't know of dies tomorrow and leaves me all his millions, there is no way I could even afford an efficiency one-bedroom apartment there. Besides, if I did live there, I'd have to live in Midtown, close to Times Square, which, as you can see from the pictures, was my absolute favorite place. Also, four days isn't enough time to see New York. Every minute of our days was jam-packed. We toured the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Ground Zero, the Mercantile Exchange, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (ran through it in 1.5 hours before it closed... doesn't really do it justice), Times Square, Chinatown, the Financial District, and even shopped at Bloomingdales. (Oh yeah, I can also say that you can map the entire island just by the Starbucks and the Barnes and Nobles stores. It seemed like every block or so had one or the other or both.) Even with all that, we still didn't see everything that we wanted to see. However, we had more than enough cab rides. Holy shnikies these drivers are crazy. I had to learn to just look out the side window and not straight ahead at the madness.
If you have the opportunity to be guest at the Mercantile Exchange trading floors, I highly recommend that you do it. This isn't the stock exchange, it's the commodity exchanges. We got to watch the trading floor for Crude Oil and Gasoline. It's insane. Men all stand in a circle yelling and giving hand signals to one other for trades. When they have a trade, they write it on a piece of paper and toss it in the middle of the circle. Runners come in every five minutes and collect the trades and hand them off to others to verify the validity of the trades and enter them into the financial database. It's crazy to see that this is how they determine our gasoline prices. I wish I could have gotten a picture of it, but they did not (for obvious reasons) allow cameras on the trading floor.
If anyone was watching the weather for New York this past week, you saw that it rained a bit. On the morning we went on our boat tour around the island, IT POURED. At one point, we couldn't see the Jersey shore at all. I almost called Bacon-kun, who lives in Jersey, to ask if she could guess what I was doing. I can hear her laughter. It matched all of ours, as we couldn't believe that we were still on the boat during the storm. My parents were not amused when Joe and I started to sing the theme to Gilligan's Island. Well, the tour was actually a three-hour tour, so it seemed fitting.
And of course, the best night for me was the night at Spamalot! If any of you love Monty Python's Holy Grail, go see this show when it comes to your area. I have the whole movie memorized, and I was still laughing at the French taunting and the Knights Who Say Ni! Speaking of which, hey Severy! My birthday is coming up and I still haven't replaced my copy of the Holy Grail... nudge nudge, hint hint
I've put up the pictures from our time in the city itself. Hopefully, my sister will be sending me her pictures from the wedding and the wedding in Aspen. I'm sorry for not elaborating enough on our trip, but I think that the pictures will speak for me more than an essay could. Edit: It turns out that I do have a picture from the Mercantile Exchange. Shawn took one with his camera phone. posted by Keri
