In the age old question among gamers, which Nintendo villain is the most evil, Ganon, Bowser or Sephiroth, Sephiroth is definitely the most evil. At least among my frogs he is. I found Bowser and Ganon both belly up Saturday morning, cause unknown. Obviously nothing was wrong with the water, because Sephiroth was just fine. He was even munching on some of Ganon's shedding skin. I have noticed that Sephiroth has always been quicker and meaner when it came to eating crickets, so it is possible that the evil genius starved his colleagues, but I'll never know. I did decide that he couldn't be left alone, so I did get another frog, and I've named him Cloud to help thwart any further evil. I find it a little amusing that I've named two frogs after a game that I've never played or even seen. Maybe that's why I've never really gotten back into Kingdom Hearts...too many inside Final Fantasy references to keep my interest.
Aside from that adventure, the weekend was okay. Saturday night I went over to my aunt's to make dinner for her, Byron, and my grandmother. My aunt bought sushi (which I now like again) and I made Japanese rice balls for the first time. I have never cooked something so messy or made me think of playing with clay. It was a lot of fun and very tasty! This time I made them with grilled swordfish, but I think next time we're going to try either seared tuna or grilled mahi mahi, just to be different. Byron then took us to Cheesecake Factory where we further gorged ourselves on dessert. Sunday not as interesting. I worked from home, cleaned the house a little, and did laundry. And watched more Full Metal Alchemist. I'm going to quote Lee here and say that Fullmetal Alchemist is like crack. No it's worse than crack. It's like crack with a storyline and a kick-ass theme song. Couldn't have put it any better myself. I only wish I had more time to watch it. Between the jury trial last week and starting school I'm having trouble finding time to relax at home. Once I break into a routine, it will be all good. And then I'll probably start playing video games again. I seem to only play video games when my plate is ten times too full.
Probably going to do some more car shopping this weekend. I really liked the Jettas, but after driving my Dad's car these past couple of weeks, I'm thinking about getting a sedan instead, so I may look at Altimas and G35s if Shawn will let me. I just hope that I finally get that police report this week so my car will get appraised! My one ton steel paperweight in the driveway isn't adding any value to the property. posted by Keri

Oh my God what an exhausting week. And if you look at the time stamp, you can see it's not near over. But I so want to go home and go straight to bed.
But before I get into all that, go read this article from the Canadian press. I have an all new respect for Alice Cooper after reading this. So nice to know someone else thinks that rock stars should stay out of politics, no matter which side of the coin they are on.
Okay, this week. I went to my first trial ever this week. And it wasn't even my case. It was Sue's case, but she was scheduled for trial in another case and that one pretty much demanded her presence and she asked me to help with this one. It wasn't even supposed to go to trial. So I figured why not. Monday afternoon at 5:30 I found out, yes we are going to trial Tuesday morning, so I had to scramble to get the exhibits ready. Thank God Sue did such a fabulous job organizing the file so I had no problem boxing it up and preparing it for court. I had no idea what this case was even about until I showed up for voir dire at the courthouse. I learned as much as the jurors did, which was really cool because I was able to form my own opinion and I knew what I would need to hear to give a defense verdict. To be on the other side of voir dire was FASCINATING. If you ever get called to jury duty, trust me, the lawyers are not wasting your time by making you wait for anything. They are constantly working and working hard every minute during voir dire. Yes, even I, the lowly paralegal, worked hard during voir dire. Voir dire started at 8:30 and we didn't pick a final panel until 5:30. I had to be at the office that morning at 7 to make sure the file was taken to the courthouse properly. Figure out what time I had to get up that morning to get there on time. Yeah, it wasn't pretty, and yes, that was a very, very long day. I had to be at the courthouse every day by 8, and I know a lot of you are thinking, so what...that's what time I get to work everyday, but with my commute, that meant getting into the shower by 5:30. If I didn't leave by 6:30, I would never get to downtown by 8. Yes, this is a shameless plug for someone to come and freaking buy our house! Anyway, back on track. Aside from the early mornings, being a part of the trial process was fun and interesting to observe. Charlie absolutely rocks in trial. Our client said it was like watching a TV show. I was so impressed watching him, especially during cross-examination. No matter how belligerent the Plaintiff got (and believe me, she did), he kept his cool and remained really polite and friendly to her. Rosalyn, the associate, was also awesome when she argued case law to the judge. I have never really talked to Rosalyn before this case (except for this one case I had with her back when I worked for Kevin, but that doesn't count), and she is a fabulous person. I'm so glad I had this opportunity to get to know her.
I never knew trial could be so exhausting. True, I wasn't the one asking the questions or formulating opening/closing arguments, but I was there, doing my best to pay attention (especially when Plaintiff's counsel spoke) and take notes. I came home every day exhausted. Last night I fell asleep before 8. It's only 2, and I'm so tired I can't really concentrate on work, which is probably why I'm writing this instead. Far more interesting than reviewing discovery responses. Of course, my beginning Japanese class class starting this week didn't help my exhaustion. I think it's going to be a fun class, but I'm so way in over my head with this language. Speaking is not going to be a problem. Reading and writing will be. I thought that since I learned the Cyrillic alphabet, learning Kanji shouldn't be so difficult. But then I learned that Kanji is only ONE OF THREE Japanese alphabets. Yes, that's right, I have to learn three alphabets. We will only learn 50 Kanji (out of 20,000) but we'll learn the other alphabets in full. In all honesty, I'm not nearly as scared of learning those alphabets as I am trying to cram in all that Kanji. Flashcard city, here I come.
And the outcome of the trial? Unanimous defense verdict. I told you Charlie rocked. posted by Keri

And the fun continues. I went to the ER this morning becaue I could barely get out of bed, my bad knee was rather swollen, I had a horrible headache, and I was dizzy. Good news: neck X-rays came out clean, so no bone or nerve damage. I have a bulge on the front right side of the neck, which is just severe muscle inflammation. My kneecap is bruised a little, but the ligaments are solid, so no further knee damage on my already bad knee. Diagnosis: muscle strain in the neck and a mild concussion. Well I've done the concussion route before, and this one is by far not as bad as the last (I can read!) and the kind doctor prescribed me happy muscle relaxants. I'm so happy I'm not really hurt, but I'll be ten times happier when the insurance company moves their butt and finds that my car has been totalled so I can take the next steps. Oh! More good news! My dad just bought a new car (Lexas LS430...you suck, Dad) and he didn't trade his in. So we met him in Groesbeck yesterday and I bought his old car for $1 as a temporary car. Now I don't need to rent a car! Yay Dad! But you still suck for getting such a nice new car. posted by Keri

I just came back from a fabulously fun vacation in Minnesota...I just wish that my following days in Texas were as fun. But I'll get to that at the end. I visited Jen in Minnesota for four days. The main event and reason for me to go (besides to see this new state she's relocated herself to) was to go see Metallica in St. Paul. But she surprised me on Friday with free tickets to the Minnesota Vikings game! As Packers fans, we definitely are NOT Vikings fans, but hey, we get to go to a pro football game, see the Metrodome, and possibly cheer for the other team. Well, the insanity of the fans detoured us from cheering for the other team, and even though the Vikings had a crushing victory, it was a lot of fun. Although, I've come to learn that Minnesota fans are rather rude. I can believe booing at referees but at your own team when they mess up? But I quickly found out that Minnesota residents aren't the most considerate people in the world. I almost got run over three times while walking by other pedestrians who felt like they needed to cut right in front of me at the turn of a dime. This wasn't just at the Vikings game. It happened at the Mall of America (biggest freaking mall I've ever seen...they even have a rollercoaster and a ferris wheel inside!) and in the grocery store. Something else about Minnesotans...not only can they not drive, but they are so stupid about driving that they need traffic signals on the feeder roads to let them know when it is okay to merge onto the highway. Can we say huge clogs on the feeders? After the game we drank way too much wine and passed out around 5 a.m. No, didn't fall asleep. Passed out. In mid sentence. So yeah, the next day we weren't moving very well. In the afternoon, Jen took me sightseeing across Minneapolis and St. Paul. We saw the St. Paul Cathedral (most marble I've ever seen in one place) which was huge. I couldn't take pictures of every fascinating thing in there, but I did try. She showed me the capital building, and then we went to Minnehaha Falls, which I could try to explain how beautiful it is, but I'll let the pictures do that for me. I will say that Minnesota is absolutely beautiful. And even though the weather was a little chilly for me (high low 70s, low upper 40s) it felt really nice.
Monday night was the all-mighty Metallica concert. I had no idea who was going to open for them until I got to Minnesota. I couldn't find it on the ticketmaster site or Metallica's site. I about peed my pants with excitement when I found out that Godsmack was the opening band. I have always wanted to see Godsmack in concert, and here I am, in St. Paul of all places, seeing my two favorite bands live. The Godsmack concert was incredible. Of course, the Minnesotans weren't that pumped about it, and practically the whole stadium was seated. I stood at first until I felt like an idiot for being the only one standing in my section. At the end of the concert, Sully yelled at everyone for not standing and told them to stand for Metallica at least. Lazy Minnesota fans. Speaking of Sully, I knew that Sully could play guitar while he sang but I had no idea he could play the congos. He spent fifteen minutes just jamming on the congos with the drummer. Then he got on another drumset and he and the drummer had a little "drum off", complete with tricks while he was singing. And Sully is really hot. Too bad he practices wicca. Almost perfect. And as the last time I saw Metallica, they were awesome. They jammed for 2 and a half hours. They did two encores, and when they were about to leave the stage, the Minnesotans all booed. Didn't I say this was a rude state? Metallica actually did play another encore after the booing, but you could tell they weren't all that happy with the fans anymore. Jen and I were thrashing around and screaming so much that we didn't speak the entire drive back because our throats hurt so much. I was so sore for a few days and I lost my voice. It was worth it. Little funny side note. I wore my Packers jersey to the concert since the Packers were playing that night. Kind of daring, I know, but I didn't care. The security guard joked about not letting me in, and another guy said I ruled for wearing it. A random guy came up to me during Godsmack and asked me if I knew I was wearing a Brett Favre jersey. I told him yeah, I'm not that dumb. He said that they don't take that too kindly in this area. I told him I'm from Texas and therefore excused. He laughed, patted me on the shoulder and said to carry on.
Of course I had so much fun I didn't want to come back to reality. As many times as my flight was delayed coming back, I wasn't sure I was going to come back. Now I really wish I hadn't. On Friday, coming back from work, I was involved in a five car pile-up. I was at a complete stop on 35 between 635 and Valley View, and I looked into my rearview mirror to see this Ford 350 speeding behind me. I cried out, "Oh fuck, no!" and braced myself for impact. I slammed on the brakes, hoping that I wouldn't hit the car in front of me. He slammed into me, threw me into the Volvo in front of me, which hit the Explorer in front of her. A black Volvo from behind the Ford tried to swerve out of the way, but hit the Ford. I slammed my head hard into the seat, and I bruised my left arm and leg which was resting on the door. I remember looking down and seeing that my high-heel on my left foot had flown off. A passenger from the Ford came to my car almost immediately and asked if I was okay. When the fire trucks came, I got out of the car. I asked the lady I hit if she was okay. She cried, "Who cares about me? What about you? Are you okay? You got hit the worst." She immediately said that she knew it was not my fault and she would be my witness. The people in the Ford were incredibly nice. He said he knew it was his fault and apologized profusely. Everyone was nice except for the people in the Explorer. Her daughter, who was not wearing a seatbelt in the back seat, was hauled off on a stretcher to an ambulance. We were angry about that. She also threatened to sue the woman I hit and me for her damages. She had the least amount of damage of all of us...he rear bumper was a little damaged. It was further reassuring with the police arrived and told us it was not our fault, it was all the Ford. Actually, the Ford had the least amount of damage. His grille was scratched up and his bed was turned into a flat bed, so it had no damage at all. My poor Blazer was a sandwich in this mess, in the dead middle of the whole thing. I drove it home, which I should not have. I noticed it was driving a lot different...it was noisier and really bouncy. I then noticed that my two rear doors were forced open an inch at the top and the bottom. We took pictures this morning and it's amazing I made it home okay. My front bumper was cutting into my tires and was about to puncture my radiator. The frame of my car in the rear has crumpled, which is why the rear doors have been twisted open. Shawn described it as "the organ effect." I was thinking about getting a new car anyway, but this is not the way I wanted to do it. Overall, the good thing is that I'm not hurt, and no one was really hurt. My head hurts, my neck is really really sore, and I have bruises on my left leg and arm, but nothing that warrants medical attention.
Not sure if I'm going to post the pictures of my car. But if you want to see the pictures of Minnesota, they're in the gallery. posted by Keri

Found another reason to dislike punk music. I would have been okay with the whole site, because everyone is entitled to their opinions, but the conspiracy corner just made me sick. I'm ready for this election to be over. Things like this and Fahrenheit 9/11 just make me so angry I can feel my blood boil. posted by Keri

I'd like to welcome all of the readers from work I just recently found out that I have. I'm a little embarrassed that some of my fellow co-workers know what I complete geek I am, but nonetheless, WILKOMMEN! But I am a little curious as to the identity of my new readers, so please drop me a line and make yourselves known!
Nothing really exciting has happened this weekend, (unless you count the new fact that I can access my work computer from home, sitting on my couch!) so I'm going to tell you all how freaking smart my dogs are. We've had a problem with Mufasa digging for quite some time. He particularly likes the shady strip of grass along one side of the house. Because it is so shady, we have a hard enough time getting the grass to grow and Mufasa's digging agenda hasn't helped the growth process. We added plastic gates to that side and tied them shut. He figured out that if he pushes hard enough, he can create a gap wide enough for his fat-butt to squeeze through. So Shawn strapped a bungie cord to the other side of the gates that will hold the gates in place and be out of reach for Mufasa to chew on the cord. So Mufasa brought in a lackey to help him get past the gates. He leaned against one of the gates, which produced an opening just enough for Bond to get his tiny face to the bungie cord and promptly chew it in half, thus opening the gates for Mufasa to resume his digging. We've re-set up the gates and a new bungie cord, but this time we've laced the bungie cord with habenero sauce. If either one can stand the agony of chewing through that, our next step will be to place landmines. I was so proud of them for being so crafty and so angry at them at the same time. My dogs are smarter than your dogs. posted by Keri

I'm such a little kid. I'm reviewing these medical records and I keep giggling that this proctologist is named Dr. Butts.
I was a total bum all weekend long and I languished in it. I kicked it off right with a random happy hour with Angie (a friend from work), Shawn, and Matt. I still can't believe I went to a happy hour twice in one week. The first one was super nice because our boss took the entire firm out for a happy hour. I didn't stay at that one for very long because it started to pour down rain and I had walked there. Corey tapped my arm and said, "Cab?" and I ran out the door to take him up on his offer. We didn't stay very long on Friday, either, just until the $2 specials were up. On Saturday, after I got my hair cut and highlighted (yes, I'm returning to my natural color), I loafed on the couch and finished Full Metal Panic! I couldn't stop myself. Every episode ended on a cliff-hanger, and I HAD to know what was going to happen next. Thanks, Bjornnes for recommending this one! FMP moves into the top 5 anime list, but it doesn't push Cowboy Bebop away. I wish I had someone besides Shawn to share my anime bliss with. He really likes Naruto, but not much else. Lee is in Waco and Bjornnes is in Seattle, so it isn't nearly as fun to talk about it without watching it together. Sigh. I need an anime buddy. Now accepting applications!
Sunday, Christi took me out for lunch as a post-birthday thingie. We hadn't seen each other since we saw the third Harry Potter movie, and seeing a movie really isn't great catch-up time. I miss the weekly get-togethers, but we've both got serious jobs and we live 45 min. away so it's hard.
I just found out yesterday that the All-Mighty Green Bay Packers will be playing the Dallas Cowboys this year. Too bad the game is in Green Bay. I talked to Angie and Sue about it, and we're going to have a get together that day to watch the game. I will be decked out in the Brett Favre jersey and cheesehead. So mark October 24th on your calendars if you want to go. I think we're going to the Fox & Hound in Addison, off of 190. I will make sure to eat fried cheese and cheeseburgers to further make a point. posted by Keri
