Thursday night was so random. Thirty+ people were all in one house watching anime on a huge 72" widescreen TV. Not only does Dave invite all these people over, but he cooks dinner and provides drinks for everyone who comes over. The odd part is that the anime chosen for the night is completely random. He shows whatever he is watching at the time, no matter where in the storyline it is. If anyone is interested in the episodes he shows, they borrow what he has. Luckily for us, he showed Naruto, a series that Sheri has been watching and that I have seen pieces of. So at least we knew who the characters were and a little of what was going on. Those who didn't were very vocal about it. I'm not sure if I'm going to go this week, mainly because I haven't received my unemployment benefits yet. Sigh. Very long and exasperating story. The gist: I may be denied benefits for being honest about turning down a job.
This weekend was on the whole uneventful. We rented some movies. Phonebooth: bad. Bend it Like Beckham: good. I took Mufasa up to Petsmart over the weekend to begin socialization training. He's getting so much better. On the way home, I came back with an aquarium and 2 firebellied frogs. Their names are Ganon and Bowser. I'm helping them with their villain training so we can take over Hyrule AND the Mushroom Kingdom! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
After I set my minions up, Shawn announced he wanted a fish aquarium. He has never ever mentioned before that he wanted fish. Apparently he grew up with them all his life. See, when you marry someone/live with someone, you don't always know everything about them! So we went back to Petsmart and bought a tank and a bunch of fish. We even have snails and two aquatic frogs. One of the aquarium decorations is the Roman Coliseum, so I took it upon myself to name all of the creatures Roman names. Well, except for the algae eater and the snails.
On the job front, it looks like I may have a job. I received a packet over the weekend that explained that I have been hired a contract hearing reporter for the federal court as soon as I receive security clearance. Man, government forms are a pain in the ass to fill out. Once I get everything filled out, it could take up to six weeks to receive my clearance so I don't think I'll be able to start working before then. So if I hear from the law firm, I can still make a decision about employment.
Website updates: new anime reviews. Hey, what else am I supposed to do while unemployed? (I mean besides looking for a job.) posted by Keri

Past weekend was a blast. I went to a football party with Kerri and Jarrett on Saturday. Some friends of Jarrett's bought a house together and they decided to have a little get together and watch the playoffs. It ended up being the girls watching the playoffs while all the guys went outside to play pool. I think that the other girls would have preferred to watch something other than the Patriots whaling on the Titans, but Kerri and I would have resorted to violence if any of them changed the channel.
On Sunday I went to see Cheaper by the Dozen with Sheri. I expected it to be an all-out comedy since Steve Martin is the star, but most of it was very, very serious. But good serious. The movie is the best birth control ever.
Today I had my first job interview since unemployment! I interviewed at an insurance defense firm in downtown Dallas (Kerri's firm). I think it went really well. However, they aren't sure if they're going to fill the vacant legal assistant position. They have to do the number crunching thing and then they'll get back to me. I really liked what I heard there, and what I've heard from Kerri, so I hope this works out. But to keep my mind off of it in the meantime, I'm doing something totally random tomorrow night. I'm going to a guy's house that I've only met once for his weekly anime night. Me. Yep, me. I'm actually going to someone-I-really-don't-know's house, by myself, to watch anime with a bunch of other anime fans/freaks. I guess if I've braved anime conventions, I can do this.
Now I KNOW I don't want to be a trial attorney. I was lucky enough to be chosen for jury duty, and even luckier to be chosen to go through the voir dire process for a case. In case you haven't gone to jury duty before, this is how it works. They cram a bunch of very unhappy people into one room. They then call out who has been selected for what case. About a fourth the people don't get picked for a case. They get to go home. I really can't complain about being picked for the next step too much...at least I got a Denton case. They were going to send some people to the JP courts in Roanoke. No, I don't know where that is. So anyway, once you're picked for a case, you go through voir dire. The attorneys on both sides question the potential jurors about their beliefs and feelings. They aren't afraid to get personal. After two hours of hearing stupid people blabber about their personal morals vs. the law, you leave the courtroom so the attorneys can pick the final panel. I didn't make the final cut. I'm not sobbing about it either. I really felt sorry for the attorneys. They knew none of us wanted to be there. The DAs, who don't have billable hours, probably didn't want to be there. They have to explain the law to a bunch of uneducated people, break it down into simplespeak, and then grill everyone as to what they believe. I think it was painful on both ends of the spectrum.
On a super super happy note, my sister is engaged! Joe proposed to her yesterday on the slopes in Colorado. She was rather unprepared since she was expecting a proposal over Christmas, and Joe didn't do it then and he's been dropping all these hints about how money is so tight. I'm so happy that Joe will be a part of the family. He's a fabulous guy with a great sense of humor. Thanks to me, he's hooked on Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Hehehe...I'm out to corrupt everyone. I'm also excited about getting to be a matron of honor. All of my close girl-friends have sisters, so I know I won't be one for any of them. Gotta start getting some ideas together for a bachelorette party. I was hoping we could go toobing, but I think the wedding will be in Feb/March, so that is definitely out.
I just shelled out a pantload of resumes and applications today. I'm getting close to desperate. How desperate? I applied at Home Depot and Gamestop today. I was offered one job, to teach freshman English at North Texas Community College, but I turned it down because I wouldn't be able to get another part-time job and I would make more money with my unemployment benefits. That's how sad the pay offer was. They only accepted applicants with a Master's degree, and my teaching friends with only a Bachelor's make more than 3x what was offered. Pathetic. posted by Keri

Added something new purely for my own amusement: One Line Anime Reviews. Check it out if you're bored. I got the idea thanks to Jarrett, who called me last night asking me what anime T-mobile used in its sidekick commercial. Sad that I knew the answer. He then asked what I thought of it, since I know a lot of anime. I told him I thought it sucked, but I really don't know a lot of anime. Then I make these reviews and discovered that I know too much anime. posted by Keri
